About the program:

This course will help young and beginning dairy producers develop a comprehensive understanding of best management practices in business and information management. The same program will be offered both dates. Videoconference links to sites across PA will enhance networking opportunities for young and beginning dairy producers.

Participants in this course will learn business management concepts that will provide a solid foundation for development of the decision-making skills necessary in today’s competitive dairy business environment.

 

Program content:

Basic Training

  • Basic Financial Concepts for Younger Producers
  • Factors affecting profitability: How profitability is tied to one’s ability to invest wisely and manage an efficient operation.
  • Criteria for evaluating your dairy business: How to maintain adequate cash flow and build equity in order to be profitable.
  • Tools for effectively communicating with your lender: The differences between basic financial statements and the integral relationship between the balance sheet and income statement.
  • Evaluating your accounting system: The characteristics of a good accounting system and how to make improvements with a standardized chart of accounts.

Evaluating Business Performance

  • Key performance indicators and benchmark analysis: The important indicators to look at, what they reveal, and some good benchmarks all dairy producers should shoot for.
  • Calculating the numbers for your business: Calculate some indicators for each operation
  • using basic information provided by each participant.
